Sterling Farms: demolish the main house?

Ah, the old wrecking ball is out again - the nemesis of any semblance of a hometown Stamford will soon be erased if the Golf Authority has its way. I received a call this morning from an Advocate reporter asking me about the main house of the complex, currently a restaurant, informing me that the Finance Board would be considering demolition at its next meeting, Thursday, July 14th, 2011. I had spoken to a local architect a year or so ago who bid on replacing the existing manor house/restaurant with an entirely new building. Restoring and adding on to the old one was not an option, he was told. I guess the ignoramus factor is at work again. To certain people (i.e the Golf Authority) an old house means you're too poor to afford a new one. "Charm?" Historic character?" not in their vocabulary.

If you'd like to see the existing restaurant building transformed into something glorious, reflecting the days when Sterling Farms was one of the outstanding "Gentleman's Farms" in the area, now is the time. Don't complain to me when you see the wrecking ball. It's too late then.

If you can't attend the meeting, consider e-mailing or writing the Mayor, mpavia@ci.stamford.ct.us
Perhaps we could all use Save Sterling Farms as the subject.
